Long-term business relationships are not always built in a straight line.
Sometimes a company earns a customer’s confidence immediately. Other times, the relationship has to be rebuilt through better work, stronger communication, and consistent follow-through.
That was the experience of one longtime South Florida aircraft engine overhaul company that has worked near Aviation Propellers, Inc. for decades.
Although the two family-owned aviation businesses had longstanding personal connections, proximity and familiarity alone were not enough to earn the engine shop’s propeller and nondestructive testing work.
AvProps had to prove itself.
Two Aviation Businesses With Deep Local Roots
For 38 years, the engine overhaul company operated near Opa-locka Airport, only minutes from Aviation Propellers.
Its leadership knew the Gaither family well, including Aviation Propellers founder Paul Gaither and the next generation of family members involved in the business.
The engine company has its own long history in aviation. Family-owned and operated since January 1977, it specializes in overhauling and supporting Lycoming and Continental aircraft engines for customers in the United States and internationally.
Its capabilities include engine, cylinder, and component work, along with a substantial inventory of engine parts and factory-new Continental engines.
Like Aviation Propellers, the company does not view technical maintenance as a commodity. Its reputation depends on the quality and reliability of the specialized vendors supporting its customers.
That made its decision about where to send propeller, governor, and nondestructive testing work especially important.
A Relationship That Had to Be Rebuilt
Despite the companies’ close proximity and personal history, the engine shop’s leadership was candid about the earlier relationship.
For a period of time, the company was not satisfied with the work it was receiving from Aviation Propellers.
That changed following a transition in AvProps’ leadership and operations.
After Paul Gaither’s passing, the next generation of leadership—including Jason Gato, George Rebecca, and members of the Gaither family—began making visible changes to the business.
A mutual contact encouraged the engine company to visit the facility again and reconsider the relationship.
They did.
“And ever since, they have earned our business big time and in full force,” the company’s owner said.
That statement matters because it was not based on family connections, geography, or reputation alone.
It was based on AvProps’ subsequent performance.
Becoming the Shop They Could Depend On
Once the engine company gave Aviation Propellers another opportunity, the working relationship expanded quickly.
Today, AvProps supports the company with propeller and governor overhaul services, along with nondestructive testing for engine components.
The engine shop also sends propellers and governors to AvProps when customers want those services coordinated as part of a larger engine project.
But one of the most important areas of collaboration is NDT.
“Nondestructive testing is one of the main things they do for us,” the owner explained.
Aviation Propellers holds a limited NDT rating and supports inspection methods that include magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, eddy current, and ultrasonic testing. Its documented capabilities also include NAS 410-qualified inspection personnel and ultrasonic inspection support for applicable Continental engine components.
The engine shop now sends the large majority of its ultrasonic inspection work to Aviation Propellers.
That confidence was not granted automatically.
“They have gone to school. They have the training. They have the certificates,” the owner said.
Daily Pickup and Delivery
Technical capability is only one part of the relationship.
The other is accessibility.
Because the two businesses are located close to one another, Aviation Propellers provides frequent pickup and delivery support. According to the engine company, someone from AvProps is at its shop nearly every business day.
That daily contact helps parts and components move efficiently between the two facilities without unnecessary shipping delays or administrative friction.
“They’re coming every day to pick up and deliver,” the owner said. “If we need something urgently, they’re right there to help us.”
For a repair station coordinating multiple customer engines, cylinders, propellers, governors, and inspection requirements, that responsiveness can simplify the entire workflow.
Instead of managing a rotating list of providers, the company prefers to build dependable relationships with a smaller number of trusted specialists.
“We don’t like to bounce around to different companies,” the owner explained. “We like to have somebody we can hang our hat on. That’s what we do with Aviation Propellers.”
Going Beyond the Basic Transaction
The engine shop’s leadership repeatedly returned to one point: willingness.
Not simply whether AvProps could perform a job, but whether the team would make an effort to help when the situation was urgent, unusual, or inconvenient.
“The support they give us is the willingness to go above and beyond,” the owner said. “They’re always there to help us.”
That support includes routine inspection work, propeller and governor coordination, urgent requests, local transportation, and direct communication between the two teams.
Aviation Propellers positions its services around responsive support for repair stations, MROs, fleet operators, FBOs, and other aviation businesses whose customer commitments depend on outside specialty shops. Its capabilities include propeller and governor overhaul and repair, NDT, AOG priority support, off-station maintenance, troubleshooting, and local pickup and delivery.
In this case, those capabilities are not merely items on a service list. They are part of an active, day-to-day working relationship.
A Partnership Between Two Family Businesses
The relationship extends beyond work orders and inspections.
Each January, the engine company hosts a large aviation industry gathering attended by customers, vendors, subcontractors, employees, and friends.
The Aviation Propellers team attends in force, giving employees from both organizations an opportunity to build relationships beyond individual transactions.
“They come over, mingle with our customers and vendors, and everybody knows each other,” the owner said. “It’s a good, friendly atmosphere.”
That familiarity does not replace technical accountability.
But when combined with consistent workmanship and dependable service, it creates a stronger working relationship between two aviation businesses with decades of experience in South Florida.
Trust Has to Be Demonstrated
The most useful part of this customer’s story is not that two neighboring companies became business partners.
It is that the customer’s opinion changed.
The engine shop had concerns about Aviation Propellers’ earlier performance and was willing to say so. AvProps’ newer leadership did not regain the work through promises. The team regained it through training, investment in capabilities, daily service, responsiveness, and repeated execution.
“They have turned the tables and earned our business,” the owner said.
That is a higher standard than customer satisfaction.
It is evidence that operational improvements were strong enough to change a skeptical customer’s mind—and consistent enough to make Aviation Propellers one of the company’s primary specialty maintenance partners.
