Why Reliable Propeller Support Matters for a Growing Regional Airline

December 6, 2025

For a regional airline, propeller reliability is not an abstract maintenance goal. It directly affects aircraft availability, flight schedules, operating costs, and passenger service.

That is especially true for Winair, the national airline of St. Maarten. The carrier operates short regional routes throughout the Northeast Caribbean, connecting neighboring islands with a fleet that includes Twin Otters and ATR 42 aircraft.

Following the pandemic, Winair experienced significant growth, expanding its fleet from four aircraft to nine in approximately two years. As the airline grew, so did the importance of having dependable maintenance partners who understood the operational demands of regional turboprop aircraft.

For propeller repair and support, Winair has relied on Aviation Propellers, Inc. for more than a decade.

A Relationship Built Over Time

Winair’s current maintenance representative began working directly with Aviation Propellers approximately two years ago, but the relationship between the two companies extends back much further.

“AvProps has been a great support,” he said. “We operate turboprop airplanes, so the propeller is what makes the airplane move forward. We need a reliable source for repairs.”

That reliability is particularly important for an airline operating frequent, short-duration flights between Caribbean islands. When an aircraft develops an unscheduled propeller issue, delays in inspection, shipping, repair, or communication can quickly disrupt the airline’s wider schedule.

According to Winair, working with Aviation Propellers has remained straightforward, even when unexpected problems arise.

“Whenever we have repairs or propellers with them, it is straightforward,” he said. “Lately, we have had some unscheduled issues, and they were immediately open to receiving our unit and doing the repairs we needed.”

Aviation Propellers supports aircraft operators with propeller and governor overhaul, repair, balancing, troubleshooting, international logistics coordination, and AOG priority support. The company is also an FAA- and EASA-certified repair station and a Hartzell Recommended Service Facility.

Reliability That Continues Through the Service Interval

For Winair, one of the clearest measures of repair quality is whether the propeller remains in service until its scheduled removal.

“If a propeller is supposed to be replaced every three years, it makes it to the three years,” the Winair representative explained. “We never have to remove it earlier because something is failing or something was not put together properly.”

That consistency helps Winair plan maintenance instead of reacting to premature removals.

The difference becomes more apparent when the airline receives leased aircraft whose propellers were serviced by a repair facility selected by the lessor. In some cases, Winair has experienced propeller removals much earlier than expected because of problems associated with previous repair work.

Those unscheduled removals create more than an inconvenience. They can require additional maintenance labor, shipping, replacement components, schedule changes, and unplanned spending.

“It makes our lives difficult,” he said. “Funds that should go toward scheduled repairs have to be used for something unexpected. You really want reliable work.”

Support Beyond the Repair Order

The relationship has also included technical training for Winair’s maintenance staff.

When Winair asked Aviation Propellers to help arrange training, Jason Gato and the AvProps team worked with the airline to make it happen.

“Sometimes it is difficult with training organizations or other companies to make smaller things like this happen,” the Winair representative said. “Jason was very open to coming down to our market and doing the training with our staff.”

That willingness to support the airline outside a standard repair transaction has helped strengthen the working relationship.

Aviation Propellers emphasizes continued technician training as part of its service model. Hartzell has also noted that AvProps technicians receive factory training and that the company participates in Hartzell’s auditing and Recommended Service Facility program.

A Maintenance Partnership That Supports Operations

The relationship between Winair and Aviation Propellers has continued through multiple maintenance leaders, fleet changes, and periods of rapid airline growth.

“The previous director of maintenance was also quite happy with Aviation Propellers,” the Winair representative said. “It has been a long-term relationship, not only with me but with other managers. That tells you we are there to support each other.”

For Winair, the value of that relationship comes down to a few practical outcomes: dependable workmanship, responsive communication, technical support, and confidence that repaired propellers will remain in service as expected.

For an airline whose aircraft fly multiple short sectors throughout the Caribbean, those outcomes matter every day.

“It is reliable work,” he said. “That is what we like about it.”
